Controlling Liver Fluke Why is it important to control liver fluke in Autumn? In a nut shell it is important to wait until a run of really frosty weather (not just a one off) before you treat for liver fluke because the cattle will get re-infected again and carry the fluke through the winter months if you treat too early. The snails go into hibernation when the average daily temperature drops below 20C and the fluke larvae are killed off by the frost, so if you treat cattle after the frost you will eliminate all the liver fluke in the cow and they will be fluke free until September/October. It is important for cattle to be parasite free over the winter because feed is often short, they use more energy to keep their body warm and they are often heavily in calf. It is also critical to use a liver fluke product that controls all 3 stages in autumn, otherwise you will be allowing the immature and early immature to survive and do major damage through the winter. We suggest Genesis Ultra Pour-On. (Source: Ancare Australia)
